FastPak for Java Installation Guide

More experienced individuals may find the following quick installation instructions are all they need to get FastPak up and running.

Once the installation binary is downloaded, use the following instructions to complete the installation:

  • Windows: Double click on the FastPak for Java installation binary you downloaded. This binary is a self extracting jar file. Double clicking on it (or using "java -jar [name of installation binary with jar extension]" in a command shell) will cause cause the file to self extract and create a new directory. The new directory will be of the same name as the install binary but it will not have the .jar extension. Open this directory up, double click on the FastPak version you want (usually Java_1.6 for Windows). You will see a directory called "FastPak." Drag the "FastPak" directory to the location you want it to reside on your drive. Note that you can change it's name if you like. Once it's been copied, open up that directory and navigate to the "Admin" subdirectory. Double click on the "Installer" icon. The FastPak installer will set up and configure all the files for FastPak and you're ready to go!

  • OS X: Double click on the FastPak for Java installation binary you downloaded. This binary is disk image (dmg) file. Double click on it's icon in the finder, and it will mount. Once mounted, double click on either Java_1.4 or Java_1.5 depending on whether your using Java 1.4 or 1.5 for your system.

  • Linux: FastPak distributions for Linux are in a "tar.gz" format. Once the binary is downloaded, open up a terminal window, change to the directory holding the installation binary and type "gunzip [binary name].tar.gz" followed by "tar xvf [binary name].tar". This will create a directory of the same name as the installation binary but minus the "tar.gz" extension. Change to this directory, and you'll see several directories (Java_1.4, Java_1.5, and Java_1.6). Depending on what version of Java you're using (1.4, 1.5, or 1.6) change to that directory. You will see a directory named "FastPak." Move this directory to the location where you want FastPak to be installed. For example, if you wanted FastPak to be moved to the directory "/home/smith" you would enter "mv FastPak /home/smith/." and FastPak would then be located in the "/home/smith/FastPak" directory. Once the directory has been moved, open up that directory and navigate to the "Admin" subdirectory. Enter the command "sh Install.sh" and the FastPak installer will configure FastPak for you. Upon completion, you're ready to go!
