Demo Installation Instructions
To install the demo, perform the following steps:
Download the appropriate demo you wish to evaluate by clicking on the appropriate link from the list of demos below. This will allow you to download and save the file.
Unpack the demo. Windows files are provided in a self extracting jar format, so all Windows users need to do is double click on the jar file and a new directory will appear with the same name as the jar file but without the .jar extension. OS X users distributions are in a DMG format, so just double click on the appropriate DMG image and it will open up in a new window. Linux users distributions are in a tar-gzip format, so the file must first be uncompressed with gunzip and then untarred with tar, and a directory of the same name as the distribution will be created minus the .tar.gz extension.
Open up the directory just created for Windows and Linux users. OS X users should already have a window open.
Drag the directory called FastPak wherever you wish to install it. If you wish to rename it the directory (it doesn't have to be called FastPak) it should be done before running the installer. Where you move and/or rename your directory is the new FastPak home directory.
Double click on the FastPak home directory icon to open it up.
Double click on the Admin directory to open it up.
Double click on the Installer icon, and the installer should run. Linux users may need to change to this directory manually, depending on their system and GUI configuration, and manually run the install.sh script by typing sh install.sh.
When the Installer is done running, FastPak is ready for use. To test it, navigate to the FastPak home directory and double click on the FastPak Icon. FastPak should start.
Run some of the demo programs, like ActiveLogo or Analyzer. This may be done by selecting the Control menu item, then Run Configured App item. A window will appear showing the list of demo apps, and you simply select one and run the program. Note that Analyzer can be quite graphics intensive for older, slower systems, and likewise CarPics and SolarPics can be quite memory intensive.
When done you may select the File menu, then Exit or Shutdown. Exit will terminate the FastPak kernel GUI but leave the thread controller and applications running, exiting only when the applications are done running. Shutdown will shut all programs and FastPak down immediately.
If exceptions are thrown during the launch of the Installer or FastPak, verify that the version of Java you're using is in fact compatible with the version of FastPak you're using. FastPak will work fine with a later version of Java than the one it's been compiled with, but it will not work with one that predates it. For example, if you download the demo for FastPak using Java 1.5, and you have Java 1.4 installed on your system, FastPak will not work. On the other hand, if you downloaded the version of FastPak compiled for Java 1.4, it will work fine if you're using Java 1.5 or 1.6. SCSC strongly recommends Java 1.6 for Linux and Windows, and Java 1.5 for OS X.
